HOW TWINS ARE BORN

Usually, only one ovum is released by an ovary in every reproductive cycle. If this ovum receives sperm and gets fertilized, one baby is born to the mother. But sometimes two eggs may be released and fertilized by two different sperms. Such siblings are called fraternal twins who may be brother-sister or brother-brother or sister-sister but non-identical twins. In certain cases, only one egg is released and get fertilized but after this, sometime, it get divided into two pieces due to mechanical pressure on womb like sex during pregnancy, weight lift during pregnancy and the two cells then separate and start developing independently into two different individual. They are identical in all respects i.e. genotype as well as phenotype and are called identical twins. They are always of the same sex. Pregnant women are need to be loved, cared and respected because unhealthy pregnant life may cause problem to mother as well as the baby. A pregnant woman is vulnerable to so many deadly diseases. So, they need be taken care in the greater interest of their healthy survival and a healthy life of upcoming baby.

Sometime twins produced from one egg are failed to separate, remain joined together and are called SIAMESE TWINS. The first case of Siamese Twins was of twin boys born to a Chinese mother in Siam (now Thailand) in 1811. These were joined at the thoracic region. These twins lived up to an age of 65 years. These twins can sometime be surgically separated. However, it depends upon the extent of their joining.
